The Biblio Collective - Shi'ism in America 4 of 5

For the Autumn and Winter of 2020, we will read and discuss Dr. Liyakat Takim’s Shi’ism in America.

We encourage you to read beforehand and join our virtual conversation.

The Biblio Collective is a book club: it’s meant to be interactive, to foster a sense of community, and to be an opportunity to share ideas with each other, learn from each other, and express reflections on and criticisms of the book—the more you bring to the table, the richer the conversation.

Meeting 4 will cover Chapter 4 “Shiʿi Leadership and America” (40 pages)

We encourage you to purchase the book, but a PDF can be found in our Reading Resources Folder.

Shiʿism in America provides the first general overview of the Shiʿi community in the United States, tracing its history, its current composition, and how Shiʿis have negotiated their identity in the American context…Both tracing the early history of the Shiʿa in America and illuminating the more recent past with new surveys and interviews, Liyakat Nathani Takim explores the experiences of this community as it has established roots in the United States.

We will use this book, published in 2009, as a starting point for conversations about

  • the history of our community and how we think about our relationship with “America”

  • the state of Muslim community institutions in the US

  • how racial, ethnic, and cultural differences shape the way we practice Islam

  • Sunni-Shiʿi relations in the US
