Seeking the Divine - Reflections on the Prayers of the Prophet’s Family - The Prayer in Confession
Join us to explore the prayers of Imam Sajjad, Ali the son of Imam Husayn. The prayers (ad’iya, plural of du’a) in the al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah are expressions of submission to the Creator. As one scholar puts it:
“Here we have one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of Islam so overawed by the sense of God's goodness, mercy, and majesty as to express his utter nothingness before the Creator…In the Sahifa we see Islamic spirituality - or that dimension of the religion of Islam which deals with the practical and lived reality of the personal relationship between man and God - expressed in the most universal of languages, that of the concrete and intimate yearning of the soul for completion and perfection.”
We will read the prayer in translation, briefly analyze the main themes, and then circle-up for reflective conversation.

Mizan: The Mahdi Part 2: Minor and Major Occultations
Register (limited spots available!)
The Mahdi, Part 2 with Instructor Shaykh Mahdi Rastani is being offered in the city of Chicago, IL!
Note: Registration is required. This is not an online event and is only in-person; a livestream or recording of the event will NOT be available.
Course Synopsis:
The period of ghaybah (occultation) of the 12th Imam of the Shi’a school of thought has been addressed in many narrations of the Ahlul-Bayt. It has been described as a time of confusion, trials and tribulations. At the same time, the Shi’a have been promised great rewards for being patient during this time and persevering in practicing their faith, while they await the reappearance of the saviour.
In this course, titled “The Mahdi, Part 2: Minor and Major Occultations”, Shaykh Mahdi Rastani discusses the following topics:
– The Start of Minor Occultation
– The Wisdom Behind Occultation
– The Practice of Wikalah
– The Lives of The Four Representatives and Their Virtues
– Exploring The Letters Written By Imam Mahdi
– Notable Events Following – The Start of Occultation
– The Role of The Imam During Occultation
– Preparation for The Reappearance
– Seeing The Imam During Occultation
– Duas Prescribed For The Occultation
– Ziyarahs Addressed To The Imam
Shaykh Mahdi will also answer the following questions amongst many others:
1 – Why did Allah decree the occultation and how many answers are provided to this question in our narrations?
2 – When did the system of wikalah begin and what areas had their own representatives?
3 – What lessons can we learn from the personal lives of the four representatives?
4 – How did the Shi’a communicate with Imam Mahdi during this time?
5 – Is it possible to see the Imam during the major occultation?
6 – Should we believe the stories we hear about people who meet the Imam or claim to be in touch with him?
7 – What duties are mentioned for the Shi’a during the time of ghaybah?
8 – What duas and ziyarahs are prescribed for these troubling times?
Crosscurrents: Faith, Politics, and Media
“While we make our media, our media make us.”
How does Mass Media shape us? Is Mass Media neutral—in terms of spiritual outlook, material worldview, politics? If not, who or what shapes the messages and toward what ends? Is there an alternative way of thinking about media and/or the culture it replaced/replaces?
We will explore the question of the media and how it affects us through a communal discussion with some presented thoughts on the nature of the system of news propaganda and the role of the market/commercialism in shaping both the media and the masses.

David Coolidge: Hindu-Muslim Exchange
Muslims entered the Indian subcontinent in the 700s. In the 1000s, they produced their first scholarly study of their Hindu neighbors, al-Bīrūnī's famous "Book of South Asia (Kitāb al-Hind)." In subsequent centuries, Muslims reflected on the different beliefs and practices of Hindus, a process which continues to this day.
Join us as we explore the history of Hindus and Muslims living side side on planet Earth, and what it means for our global society of the 21st century.
R. David Coolidge is Visiting Faculty at Bayan Islamic Graduate School. He received his Ph.D. in 2023 from the Graduate Theo-logical Union (GTU), with a dissertation about Muslim percep-tions of the Hindu tradition. He was formerly the Muslim chap-lain at Dartmouth College and Brown University. He converted to Islam in 1998, and in 2004 married Sumaiya Balbale. They have two children and live in Oakland, CA.

Crosscurrents: Faith, Politics, and Class
Does the Muslim community in the US have class consciousness? How do we think about being workers and consumers in an economy that often works against our values and interests?
We will put a few ideas in conversation in a communal discussion about how our values can be activated in the economic and workplace spheres of life. We will explore the history of worker struggle in the US and the pressing need of being critical of our economic system as it hollows out the middle class, deepens poverty, and plays a role in the Genocide against the Palestinians

What is Real? Modern Man and Illustion
The movement of Husayn ibn ʿAli aimed to raise humankind from the shadows of darkness into the Light of the Real. He rose to revive the wholeness the Prophetic Message at a time when spiritual and governmental corruption sought to blur the edges of Reality.
This series is an exploration of how we are imprinted by pseudo-events and illusion: a world that is created to make us perceive reality in particular ways. It formats the social consciousness and molds our individual souls. Its goal is to make us perceive reality less and to see only within the confines of a pseudo-world of pseudo events: a hall of mirrors.
This illusion is after our attention and energy.
The Divine Light that radiates from the epic of al-Husayn (‘a) is our corrective that focuses our vision on The Real.
