Building Our Future During Crisis: A Spiritual, Emotional, and Material Response
The war against Iran has accelerated the already slowing trajectory of the US economy with prices at the gas pump and everyday goods rising. People are losing jobs and struggling with every day costs, which never went down after the last round of inflation.
How do we respond to this crisis as a growing Muslim community? We will have a wide ranging discussion covering the spiritual, emotional, and material responses which ensure our community can not only survive but thrive as we answer the call to support our growing community.
The Friday Prayer: Jumu'ah at Sacred Roots
Join us on Fridays at Sacred Roots for the Friday Prayer (Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah) followed by refreshments.
The Friday prayer is a weekly gathering of the Muslim community. Its two sermons are meant to inspire the audience to strengthen their steps toward God and a dignified life.
The sermons are followed by a communal prayer to tie the hearts of the community together in worship of the Divine.
O you who have faith! When the call is made for prayer on Friday, hurry toward the remembrance of God, and leave all business. That is better for you, should you know.
And when the prayer is finished disperse through the land and seek God’s grace, and remember God greatly so that you may be felicitous.

Against Brain Rot: An Exploratory Book Reading - The Unsettling of America
Against Brain Rot is an opportunity to put aside the algorithm, listen, engage your mind’s eye, and reflect.
Each Tuesday from April 28th to June 2nd we will read from Wendell Berry’s The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture. In it, Berry offers incisive critiques about contemporary industrial life and how our relationship with machines affects our relationship with the earth, with our homes, and with our selves.
“A landmark work of environmental writing that powerfully argues that our estrangement from the land through industrial farming is a cultural and spiritual crisis.”
Each reading will be open-ended with no particular stopping point. We will continue each session where we left off the session before, allowing the text, commentary, and conversation to organically develop.
Dinner & a Documentary: Iran and the West - Nuclear Confrontation - Part 3
RSVP
Join us for dinner and a movie to learn about the context of the current war and to dissect the establishment view of contemporary Islamic anti-imperialism.
During our meal we’ll be watching Part 3 of BBC's Iran & the West.
“In part three of this landmark series from Norma Percy and the team that made the multi-award winning documentaries The Death of Yugoslavia and Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, contributors including Iran's President Khatami tell the inside story of the West's continuing nuclear confrontation with Iran. The film also shows a rare moment when they worked together.
US State Department insiders tell how, after 9/11, Iran played a key role in helping America to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan - only for President Bush to put Iran into his 'axis of evil' immediately afterwards. Jack Straw, then foreign secretary, and President Khatami describe how Iran offered to help the US and its allies in their war against Saddam Hussein - help that, given Iran's powerful contacts in Iraq and the West's subsequent difficulties there, might have made a crucial difference.
Jack Straw, his successor Margaret Beckett, and Joschka Fischer of Germany describe how they struggled to find a compromise between Iran and President Bush's hardliners over Iran's nuclear programme. John Sawers at the UN reveals an extraordinary secret deal that Iran proposed a few years later.”
We’ll hold a short post-film discussion circle for those interested.

Seeking the Divine - Reflections on the Prayers of the Prophet’s Family
Join us to explore the prayers of Imam Sajjad, Ali the son of Imam Husayn. The prayers (ad’iya, plural of du’a) in the al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah are expressions of submission to the Creator. As one scholar puts it:
“Here we have one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of Islam so overawed by the sense of God's goodness, mercy, and majesty as to express his utter nothingness before the Creator…In the Sahifa we see Islamic spirituality - or that dimension of the religion of Islam which deals with the practical and lived reality of the personal relationship between man and God - expressed in the most universal of languages, that of the concrete and intimate yearning of the soul for completion and perfection.”
We will read the prayer in translation, briefly analyze the main themes, and then circle-up for reflective conversation.

Ramadan Gatherings - Islam as a Way of Seeing VI
Tonight at Sacred Roots we will hold prayer and a light iftar dinner that will be easy to grab and go.
Instead of holding our normal lecture, we are encouraging everyone to drive to the Northwest Suburbs to Baitul Ilm at 485 South Bartlett Road, Streamwood, IL 60107 for a Chicago-wide gathering (majlis).
If you are coming from the Chicagoland suburbs, consider going directly to Baitul Ilm for prayer and iftar – we will meet you there afterward.
For those who do not drive, we are identifying people with space in their cars to try to help set up carpool options.
For people in the city who drive, please consider offering your car to those who don’t have transportation to the suburbs. Our team will try to match people with carpool seats during dinner.
• 5:30 – Doors Open
• 5:58 – Prayer
6:15 – Dinner (sandwiches)
• 6:45 – Drive To Baitul Ilm / Closing of SR
• 8:00 – Baitul Ilm Majlis
