Ramadan Gatherings - Islam as a Way of Seeing VI

RSVP | Sponsor

Tonight at Sacred Roots we will hold prayer and a light iftar dinner that will be easy to grab and go.

Instead of holding our normal lecture, we are encouraging everyone to drive to the Northwest Suburbs to Baitul Ilm at 485 South Bartlett Road, Streamwood, IL 60107 for a Chicago-wide gathering (majlis).

If you are coming from the Chicagoland suburbs, consider going directly to Baitul Ilm for prayer and iftar – we will meet you there afterward.

For those who do not drive, we are identifying people with space in their cars to try to help set up carpool options.

For people in the city who drive, please consider offering your car to those who don’t have transportation to the suburbs. Our team will try to match people with carpool seats during dinner.

• 5:30 – Doors Open
• 5:58 – Prayer
6:15 – Dinner (sandwiches)
• 6:45 – Drive To Baitul Ilm / Closing of SR
• 8:00 – Baitul Ilm Majlis

Please let your friends and family members know and plan accordingly.

Dinner and a Documentary - Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade

RSVP
Join us for prayer, dinner, a movie, and discussion.

This film was released in 2016 but is still relevant for understanding today’s political issues.

The movie deals with violence and includes graphic documentation of war.

From Ronald Reagan to Barack Obama, from Margaret Thatcher to Tony Blair, Shadow World reveals the shocking realities of the global arms trade, the only business that counts its profits in billions and its losses in human lives.

Based on The Shadow World: Inside the Global Arms Trade, the acclaimed book by Andrew Feinstein, the film explores how governments, their militaries and intelligence agencies, defense contractors, arms dealers and agents are inextricably intertwined with the international trade in weapons, and how that trade fosters corruption, determines economic and foreign policies, undermines democracies and creates human suffering.

Chai Chat Article Discussion - The Black Hills Are Not For Sale: The Lakota Struggle for the 1868 Treaty Territory

RSVP | ZOOM

Chai Chat is an interactive gathering where we explore current social concerns and other issues that affect our spiritual and communal cultivation. We invite you to read ahead of time. If you don’t get to it, join us for a summary presentation and the discussion.

We will discuss Churchill’s article, “The Black Hills Are Not For Sale: The Lakota Struggle for the 1868 Treaty Territory.” You can read it here, pages 113-134.

The article analyses the various ways the US government used forces and treaties to justify economic “opportunities” and the colonization of more territory. It also illustrates that this isn’t a relic of the past, it is a live and ongoing struggle; there exists Native resistance through court cases and other means.

Join us to discuss the relevance of this struggle to similar contemporary issues of law, liberation, and oppression.
