Seeking the Divine - Reflections on the Prayers of the Prophet’s Family
Join us to explore the prayers of Imam Sajjad, Ali the son of Imam Husayn. The prayers (ad’iya, plural of du’a) in the al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah are expressions of submission to the Creator. As one scholar puts it:
“Here we have one of the greatest spiritual luminaries of Islam so overawed by the sense of God's goodness, mercy, and majesty as to express his utter nothingness before the Creator…In the Sahifa we see Islamic spirituality - or that dimension of the religion of Islam which deals with the practical and lived reality of the personal relationship between man and God - expressed in the most universal of languages, that of the concrete and intimate yearning of the soul for completion and perfection.”
We will read the prayer in translation, briefly analyze the main themes, and then circle-up for reflective conversation.

Dinner & a Documentary: Iran and the West - Nuclear Confrontation - Part 3
RSVP
Join us for dinner and a movie to learn about the context of the current war and to dissect the establishment view of contemporary Islamic anti-imperialism.
During our meal we’ll be watching Part 3 of BBC's Iran & the West.
“In part three of this landmark series from Norma Percy and the team that made the multi-award winning documentaries The Death of Yugoslavia and Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, contributors including Iran's President Khatami tell the inside story of the West's continuing nuclear confrontation with Iran. The film also shows a rare moment when they worked together.
US State Department insiders tell how, after 9/11, Iran played a key role in helping America to topple the Taliban in Afghanistan - only for President Bush to put Iran into his 'axis of evil' immediately afterwards. Jack Straw, then foreign secretary, and President Khatami describe how Iran offered to help the US and its allies in their war against Saddam Hussein - help that, given Iran's powerful contacts in Iraq and the West's subsequent difficulties there, might have made a crucial difference.
Jack Straw, his successor Margaret Beckett, and Joschka Fischer of Germany describe how they struggled to find a compromise between Iran and President Bush's hardliners over Iran's nuclear programme. John Sawers at the UN reveals an extraordinary secret deal that Iran proposed a few years later.”
We’ll hold a short post-film discussion circle for those interested.
