Karbala, Community, and Liberation I

The Month of Muharram 2020 - 1442

Sūrat al-Fajr 89:27-28

“O soul at peace, return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing!

يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

For nights 6 through 10 (Aug. 24-28) of the month of Muharram, Sacred Roots will host gatherings in honour of Imam Ḥusayn son of ʿAlī, the grandson of the Prophet Muḥammad entitled: Karbala, Community, and Liberation.

This year’s lectures will focus on knowledge of self and community, and an Islamic critique of spiritual decay and domination. Reflections on Imam Ḥusayn’s ethical character and his stand at Karbala will help us paint a picture of an Islamic view of liberation.

We will gather each night between August 24th - 28th at 8:15 pm Central

Program Outline:

؞ Recitation of the Qurʾan.

؞ Community-led English Poetry and Prose on Karbala and connected themes

؞ Lecture

؞ English Lamentation and English Ziyārah of Imam Ḥusayn and the Martyrs of Karbala
